LatheCity Tip

Perhaps one recognized that more time is lost clamping center drills and drill bits in Jacobs drill chucks then it would be good. These simple, affordable, and useful accessories give one a fast tool change system. This is an extended length piece, i.e., it reaches over the cross-slide.

  • For the novice: Center drill sizes are standardized, i.e., if you purchase these from Sherline or anywhere else a #1 Center drill has an O.D. of 1/8". Similarly #2 is 3/16"; #3 is 1/4". Yes, you can also stick a drill bit with  3/16" shank diameter in a #2 center drill holder.
  • We also make custom sizes, usually the same price.
  • The Metric or English lathes from Sherline have the same tailstock which is Morse #0 (reduced length).
  • Note that all of our standard Morse taper are reduced-length taper tailored towards tabletop systems with short tailstock spindles. Other sizes can be made.
  • You may find a cheap Jacobs chuck somewhere, but these are usually too short to reach over Sherline's cross-slide. This adapter is long enough.
